Payments Operations Lead

About the Role
We are currently looking for a Payments Operations Lead to join our team!
In this role, you will own the end-to-end payment operations and payments strategy across our entire ecosystem: web, Apple App Store, and Google Play. You will act as the primary owner and internal customer of in-house payment platform and subscription engine.
The platform is stable and operates at scale. The focus of this role is evolution rather than firefighting: unifying bespoke web subscriptions with app-store billing and external systems into a coherent, well-observed payments domain; improving performance, reliability, and anti-fraud tooling; and enabling new commercial capabilities such as additional payment methods, promotions engine, pricing experimentation, and retention mechanics.

Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end global payment operations for a subscription-based business across web and app stores, multiple currencies, and markets
  • Define, track, and continuously improve core payment KPIs, including authorisation rates, involuntary churn, refunds, chargebacks, payment costs, and overall payment reliability
  • Own the payments strategy and Payments-as-a-Product roadmap, setting clear priorities and trade-offs in partnership with Product and Engineering, and driving delivery against measurable business impact
  • Act as the primary owner of relationships with third-party payment providers, services, and gateways, optimising performance, pricing, coverage, and fraud outcomes
  • Provide operational ownership of payment risk and chargeback performance, working closely with Customer Support, Finance, and Engineering teams that execute day-to-day case handling
  • Lead and coordinate payment-related regulatory and compliance initiatives (e.g. PCI DSS, PSD2, SCA)
  • Act as a senior cross-functional partner translating commercial and operational needs into clear payment initiatives and system improvements

We expect that you have
  • Proven experience owning payments and subscriptions for a B2C digital product at scale, across multiple platforms and regions
  • Strong practical understanding of card payments and APMs, app-store billing models, declines and retries, chargebacks, refunds, fraud controls, and subscription lifecycle mechanics
  • A demonstrated track record of owning payment KPIs end-to-end and driving measurable improvements, rather than solely reporting on performance
  • Experience working with bespoke billing or subscription systems alongside third-party platforms such as app stores, PSPs, and subscription tooling
  • A product-oriented, systems-thinking mindset, comfortable operating with ambiguity, trade-offs, and imperfect data
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to use data to inform decisions, prioritisation, and strategy
  • A solid grasp of payments regulations and compliance requirements
  • The ability to operate as a senior individual contributor with real accountability and influence, without relying on hierarchy or large teams
  • Experience working cross-functionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership
